I just sent out the emails, but unfortunately I doubt it will do much good.

Dicky, Liz, Stacey, Chuck and everyone else who put the show together--thank you. You guys were an oasis of intelligence and wit in a sea of dim-witted vulgarity.

Does anyone have personal emails for the MMS crew? I would like to send them personal thank yous as well.

Over the last few weeks, it seemed that Dicky was getting annoyed with the playlist. I'm guessing he didn't have total control over that, although he could probably play 75% (guessing) of what he wanted versus the corporate programming machine. Maybe ending the show was his choice, but I guess we'll never know.

I remember someone calling in and asking to hear "any other song by Wolfmother" and he replied "nope, can't do it".

Oh well, it was nice to have a smart and thoughtful, slightly offbeat program for a year. Thanks, Mighty Morning Show.

P.S. This is what I wrote in my letter:

I'm writing to express my outrage and disapointment over the cancellation of the Mighty Morning Show.

The Mighty Morning Show was an oasis of intelligence and wit in a sea of dim-witted vulgarity. Dicky Barrett, Liz Warner and the rest of the crew went far beyond the usual corporate schlock to deliver a program that made me look forward to my morning commute.

Indie 103.1 is rapidly becoming KROQ. Just what we don't need--a bland and generic corporate radio station.

You guys do realize that satellite radio is breathing down your necks? You do realize that Shoutcast and iTunes are making broadcast radio increasingly irrelevant? You do realize that consumers have a choice?

I'm exercising my choice. I will no longer be a listener of your station.

He will not address If Dicky is still on the air, only that he is working full time on Jimmy Kimmel..

I emailed the program manager and was told by him that Dicky LEFT to work on the Kimmel show fulltime. Seems a little random...why no swan song then, eh?

I wonder if he got fired for the abortion talk yesterday and that lawyer called in saying that law couldn't be held up. Or maybe something else that was political. I wonder. If it is political well...

Remember, remember the 5th of November!!!

LA Taurus, do you mind sharing Dicky's email? I'd like to write him.

I wrote Dicky at the MMS a few months ago and he sent me a really nice and prompt reply. He also answered the phone the one time I called the station. Just a sweet, accessible guy. Gah, I'm going to miss the show.

I just wrote in to Indie and I'm so sad and disappointed over this. Why? What's going on? This sucks, they can't just leave MMS listeners out in the dark! Aren't we the listeners making this station what it is? The least they can do is tell us why. The best they can do is get them back on! this sucks!
This is Juliana from deep south Texas!!!! They have huge fans down here too!

I have never liked morning radio until I moved to LA and found Dicky. This is so sad. Indie can be sure I won't be listening to their morning show any more. Dicky was like a friend and local hero even if you only knew him through the radio. We would have just as many "Who was Dicky talking to today" conversations here at work as we would "What happened on (insert lates tv craze here)." Whne's the last time people did THAT with a radio show. Outraged...

All Indie employees

You may have missed it but the whole point of the supposed "non-format" of the Indie103.1 playlist was the initial draw for me and most of your other listeners who truly love music. You seemed to be a station run by music fans, for music fans.

Listening to your station was a joy for me as it constantly surprised with it's unpredictability - Black Flag to Bauhaus to Bowie to Ben Kweller - one never knew what was coming next. The only thing you could be sure of was that it would be a personal, thoughtful selection instead of a homogenous pre-formatted cookie cutter corporate-approved track. You gave me a couple of good years but everybody knows all good things must come to an end. And it is so fucking trite but much like the premature end of all vital, interesting art and communication in mainstream media, this music-fan's format was doomed because of it’s success by the... those who deem ratings (money) as the only barometer of their self-worth.

It has not gone un-noticed that the subtle change over the last year or so where you have slowly turned from the "pirate radio - anything goes" type-format to one that is more supportive of corporate interests, coincided with more corporate sponsorships and slicker advertisements (read: more money involved). Truly unfortunate for those of us who felt we could count on Indie as a "music fan's radio station".

So now Indie appears to be following in KROQ's well-trodden footsteps (they were cool at their inception as well). Well, everyone needs to do whatever they can to make a living, so good luck. A word of advice, however: I doubt that he world needs another KROQ, but corporate hacks are nothing if not lemmings so either get out when you see the edge, or have fun on the way down (just make sure your 401k's don't have too much Indie stock). And when are you going to have Steve Jones, Henry Rollins (when you can get him), Dave Navarro (who will learn) and Native Wayne (Legend tracks only from now on) et al, follow an official, corporate approved playlist? Soon I bet. Indie doesn't officially suck yet but keep playing Jimmy Eats World and their ilk, then forcing your hosts follow a pre-defined playlist instead of their own personal choices and you'll get there in no time. Hopefully they will have filled their coffers and will be able to bail out before their musical integrity is irrevocably sullied by a lemmings' death brought on by typical, shallow minded, bottom line driven, corporate shills, the likes of which you surely are.

Final Thought:
Yet again, the human qualities of individuality, personality, intelligence, integrity and art are deemed unimportant in corporate culture, so now they must find yet another home.

Caveat: Supposing that this missive was prompted by the firing of Dicky Barrett is simplistic, his exodus merely cements what was obviously becoming your reality. Good luck to him.

In the grand tradition of dying radio, Dawn G. will, I imagine, continue to fail upwards once Indie has been run into the ground and turned into yet another bland soccer mom radio station and disappeared into the hinterlands of FM anonymity.

Meanwhile, the audience that was so carefully built by interesting, compelling personalities will, yet again, be driven into the arms of online radio in order to get their fix while waiting for someone else to come along…

Enjoy your focus groups and declining ratings, Dawn.
